PS5 HUNT COMPLETE!

Heh. So literally the day after that last post, I got one ordered. Just kept obsessively refreshing the Sony Direct store page every day until I got lucky and got into the random sales queue for the day about 1-2 minutes before everyone else noticed and the entire internet descended upon it like they do every time a PS5 sale is announced.

So some quick first impressions: the 3D Pulse wireless headset is very well designed and sounds amazing. I’ve only tried out one PS5 game with it so far, but the level of detail, quality, and immersion of the sound really lives up to the hype.

The controller is a little heavier than the last gen ones, but it feels extremely responsive and sturdy. The new enhanced haptic feedback works well in conjunction with the enhanced audio and adds another nice little layer to the experience. (I can’t wait to see this audio and controller combine with their next VR rig, that’s gonna be insane)

I was surprised at how quiet the system runs too. PS4 Pro sounds like a little plane trying to take off off on some of the more intensive games, but this thing is dead silent. That nice SSD at work I guess. The games so far seem to run entirely off that too and not at all from the disc drive, which is good because that part is noisy as fuck when it’s installing a game.

So yeah…it’s pretty great so far. Demon’s Souls is fucking awesome, but I’ll get into that next time…

Guess what I got!?!

If you guessed everything except an actual fucking PS5 to play this shit on YOU WIN!

Let me tell you, PS5 hunting is a pain in the ass. Sony’s weird online shop queue is half broken and seems completely random, I sure as hell am not gonna get up at 6am to camp out at Walmart all day just to have a CHANCE to maybe get one, and the few other stores selling it…refuse to actually sell it (Target for example allegedly has them in stock in some stores, but will only sell them online, but…isn’t selling them online).

Eh, whatever. I’ll get it one of these days…

Astyanaliens?

Remember Astyanax, the fantasy side scrolling hack and slash for NES? Did you know there was an arcade version? I never once saw this game in an arcade, but apparently it was out there and…the last level suddenly reveals that it was actually aliens behind everything?

Definitely not ripping off H.R. Giger at all…
And that’s DEFINITELY not a xenomorph from Aliens…

Just always thought that was weird is all. Games sure did love ripping off Aliens back in the day…

Final Fantasy 7 Fever

Part 1 of the remake was fucking amazing, but it only being part of the story still left some of that FF7 urge unscratched, so recently I went back and played the original again on Vita. It still wasn’t enough though. I needed MORE! So I thought what the hell I’ll play all the spinoffs again too.

So of course I’ve never played the lesser known Before Crisis, it having been an old-timey mobile game that only ever released in Japan. Naturally, the internet couldn’t let that slide though and the game has since been remade by a fan in English for RPG Maker. Conveniently enough there’s also a homebrew version of RPG Maker Player for Vita too, so that’s nice. Too bad it’s a terrible game! Maybe it was exciting by 2004 mobile game standards, I seem to remember mobile games being pretty awful back then, but trying to play it now isn’t too fun. Extremely basic and clunky gameplay, writing, and graphics. I just couldn’t get into it and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, even big fans of the world of Final Fantasy 7.

Crisis Core still holds up pretty well. Great graphics and sound for a dated handheld game. Decent combat and an interesting, if sometimes a little cheesy, story. I always found it impressive that this game managed to make me care so much about a former background character like Zack, to the point where I remember hoping he’d end up surviving somehow even though we all know he’s already dead (and yes I was quite excited to see him pop up again in Remake). Anyway, it was pretty fun, but I do feel like playing in New Game+ was a mistake. I did turn the difficulty up to hard, but it was still super easy with how overpowered I was from the first playthrough. Note to self: just start over fresh next time.

And then there was Dirge of Cerberus. Ehhhhhhhh. I can see now why I couldn’t remember a single thing about this game. Great graphics and sound for its time, but everything else about it is painfully mediocre. It’s just an utterly average 3rd person shooter with a director who very clearly thought he was making a Metal Gear Solid game. Shiiiiit, just sooooo many cutscenes and almost none of them remotely interesting. Vincent is a boring protagonist who barely speaks and just gets mountains of exposition dumped on him by a bunch of boring new characters with funny names and even funnier outfits. Like the one eyed, one armed scientist who knows martial arts and dresses like some kind of 80’s movie hooker underneath her labcoat for some reason. They just scream “I think I’m in a Kojima game!”. Really the only thing worth seeing here is the high end cg cutscenes (which make up a very small portion of all the game’s cutscenes), which were done by the same animators of Advent Children. Next time I’ll just watch those on YouTube instead of wasting a dozen hours on this snorefest.

Now…what to play next while killing time until I can get a PS5?

Analyzing the data of House of X/Powers of X (The looooong version)

Well, this is one thing exciting enough to get me to post on here again. Jonathan Hickman’s revolutionary new X-Men relaunch has been divisive over the last few months, to say the least. Some people are angry about their favorite characters undergoing such drastic changes and acting so strangely, some are so 4D hyper-woke that they think that the cult-like and occasionally objectively and shockingly immoral actions taken by this new iteration of the X-Men are just a byproduct of an oppressed people embracing their culture, and some people are just plain confused by it all.

Others though, have been paying attention to the details and seeing what’s really going on behind the curtain here, which is only the beginning of a masterfully crafted time/space/dimension-spanning epic that stands to have disastrous consequences for not just the entire mutant race, but possibly the entire Marvel existence.

In this second of two posts, I’ll be analyzing the hints throughout the ENTIRE series of House of X/Powers of X. It is a very lengthy post that covers everything remotely informative and/or suspicious in detail.

If you’d rather just read a shorter explanation of what’s really going on Krakoa and what the future might bring for the X-Men check out the other article: What’s really going on in this new era of X-Men and what may come next

So let’s take a look at the fascinating trail of facts that leads to the real answers that so many people seem to be missing.

Major spoilers ahead for all of House of X and Powers of X obviously. I’m also going to be assuming that anyone reading this has read the whole thing already and so I’ll be jumping back and forth across the timeline (which I can’t really help given all the connections that are hinted at earlier on, but not expanded on until much later).

Can we just talk about how terrible the writing in Days Gone is for a second?

It’s funny, because I finished this game a good month or so ago, yet I still find myself thinking about just how bad the writing was, so I guess you’re just going to have to hear me complain about it a bunch so I can stop being annoyed by it in my head! Probably some mild spoilers to be seen here, though honestly I don’t think anyone is going to have any surprises ruined for them by anything said/shown here since every single aspect of the plot is so painfully predictable.
